"Sit a Spell" brings me back to the 1700's. This was a time when the British government made the first land grant in North Carolina, to entice settlers. It was for what is now Colington Island, surrounded by the Currituck, Albemarle, and Roanoke Sounds between Kill Devil Hills and the mainland. Sir John Colington used the grant to set up a plantation in 1664. He had cattle brought over by boat to graze on the scrubby marsh grasses. He had houses and barns erected, and corn planted. His was the first permanent English settlement in the barrier islands.
Soon, runaways, outlaws and entrepreneurs began settling the island. Its intricate bogs and creeks were easy to hide in, and the fresh fruit and fish and waterfowl kept bellies full. Also, if shipwrecks washed ashore, local residents quickly stripped the wood off the boat, repurposed the sails, and took anything of value on board. If people on the wrecks were still alive, they were helped and healed by the settlers. If you were going to be a shipwreck victim, this was not a bad place to wash ashore!
